The case of members of a transnational criminal network has been opened in Šiauliai District Court

Charges have been filed against 33 individuals in a significant criminal proceeding. The matter, involving a drug-smuggling gang that was dismantled in Klaipėda, was scheduled for a mixed trial, with some participants present in the courtroom and others joining remotely. However, the commencement of the case was postponed until October because one of the accused claimed not to have received the indictment, preventing the court from proceeding initially.

The proceedings were largely guided by requests made by the trial participants. These included a motion to move the case from the examining court. Furthermore, suspicions of bias were raised concerning one of the accused’s lawyers and their defense counsel.

The prosecutor supporting the state’s case presented arguments during the proceedings. The trial relates to the operation that targeted the drug-smuggling gang. While the court was unable to start the case immediately due to procedural issues concerning the indictment, the legal process continues.

The initial filing involved multiple defendants, with one individual having already passed away. The overall handling of the trial incorporated both in-person and virtual participation, ensuring the continuation of the judicial process in the coming months.
