During a previous instance of cleaning the Neris, participants observed the significant level of underwater pollution in the city center, highlighting the extensive impact of human activity on the local environment. This year, the initiative is continuing with the goal of cleaning the entire 24-kilometer stretch of the river in Vilnius. Akvilė Liaudanskienė, Director of Corporate Affairs and Marketing for the Daru Group, which spearheaded the project, stated that these efforts are crucial not only for achieving a cleaner river but also for increasing public environmental awareness and fostering a stronger relationship between the community and nature.
The scope of the current undertaking is substantial, targeting the removal of debris from an approximate 7.5 to 8-kilometer section of the riverbed. The cleaning efforts will cover varied terrains, encompassing both the central urban area where the river flows alongside concrete embankments, and the more natural sections near Antakalnis and Verkiai. Officials anticipate that the composition of the riverbed will reveal a considerable amount of accumulated waste.
The commitment to this annual cleaning project demonstrates a sustained effort to mitigate pollution. By tackling the river’s pollution incrementally over the course of the year, organizers aim to restore the ecological health of the waterway while simultaneously educating the public about responsible waste management practices.
