The doors to international competitions have been opened for Russian figure skaters

The International Skating Union (ISU) announced on Tuesday that athletes representing Russia and Belarus will be permitted to participate in major international competitions, provided they compete without displaying state symbols, including national flags, uniforms, or anthems. This decision follows the initial ban imposed on athletes from both nations after the large-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. Under the new guidelines, the ISU has stipulated specific conditions for the return of Russian and Belarusian figure skaters to the competitive circuit.

Participation is contingent upon meeting several criteria. Specifically, athletes will be barred from competing if they are currently serving in the armed forces or a national security agency of either Russia or Belarus. Furthermore, involvement in military operations related to the war against Ukraine, or active and public support for the conflict since February 2022, will result in disqualification from international events.

The ISU stated that its decision was made after taking into account “the changes” in the geopolitical landscape. These revised regulations aim to allow for a degree of participation in global competitions while maintaining adherence to the sanctions framework established following the conflict. The allowance for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete underscores a conditional return to international sporting activities, placing clear restrictions on national representation and military affiliation.
