The ECtHR rejected the complaint of journalists R. Miliūtė and V. Danauskienė regarding the recording of a government meeting

The Ministry of Justice has reportedly determined that the complaint filed by R. Miliūtė and V. Danauskienė was unfounded.

The journalists had previously alleged that officials responsible for withholding information from state institutions faced no prosecution, nor did they receive any form of compensation. The core of the dispute dates back to 2018. At that time, the government, under the leadership of Saulius Skvernelis, declined to provide the journalists with a recording of a Cabinet of Ministers meeting.

Subsequently, the government indicated that the recording had been destroyed. The Government’s Chancellery maintained that recordings of such meetings were not considered public records, advising the applicants to instead consult the publicly available meeting protocol. In response to this stance, the applicants challenged the decision both in court and before the Lithuanian Ministry of Justice.

Following these proceedings, the Ministry of Justice issued a report finding the initial complaint to be unfounded. This ruling meant that the formal grievance filed by the journalists was ultimately rejected. The case centered on the access to governmental documentation and the legal status of meeting recordings versus official protocols.
