The functions of nursing assistants are expanding: they will be able to perform these procedures

The Ministry of Health has issued an order establishing revised qualification requirements for nursing assistants, a move intended to optimize staffing levels amid existing shortages within both outpatient and inpatient care facilities. According to Jurgita Platakytė, adviser to the Minister of Health, the primary goal of these structural changes is to create a clearer division of labor among the entire nursing team. The restructuring aims to ensure that each specialist can operate within their area of proven competence.

Under the new framework, certain less complex activities are designated for nursing assistants. This reallocation of basic functions is designed to allow registered nurses to dedicate more time to critical tasks, such as complex clinical interventions, comprehensive patient health assessments, and overall care coordination. Platakytė stated that the reorganization of these nursing functions is anticipated to contribute to more efficient organizational practices and smoother teamwork across healthcare settings.

The formal directive, titled “On the qualification requirements for the nursing assistant,” was signed by Minister of Health Maria Jokubauskienė. The implementation of these revised roles seeks to maximize the utilization of skilled personnel. By clearly delineating the specific functions expected of nursing assistants versus those requiring the expertise of professional nurses, the healthcare system aims to enhance the quality and efficiency of patient care delivery while addressing current staffing limitations.
