Despite these financial concerns regarding full interconnection, the Energy Distribution Operator (ESO) has outlined significant modernization plans. The ESO intends to replace double the current overhead power lines with underground cabling. Specific timelines include the interconnection of approximately 700 kilometers of electrical lines over the next four years, with an additional 2,000 kilometers planned within the next decade.
Adding to the discussion, Energy Minister Lukas Savickas emphasized the critical need to accelerate the pace of underground cable interconnection. Minister Savickas argued that if the national network were equipped with 6,000 kilometers of underground cabling, the impact of recent severe storms could have been significantly mitigated. These statements highlight a divergence between the high cost of complete grid overhaul and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to enhance resilience and reliability.
