Concerns have been raised by local residents regarding the significant accumulation of seaweed along the resort’s coastal areas. According to resort Mayor Šarūnas Vaitkus, the accumulated seaweed is currently undergoing removal using specialized machinery, though the process is expected to be lengthy. Mayor Vaitkus stated on Monday that the cleanup effort is ongoing, noting that the volume of seaweed remaining in the sea suggests that further deposits are probable in the coming days.
He estimated that the complete cleaning of the beach would require a minimum of three days. In contrast, Alexander Siakki, the chief of local lifeguards, provided an assessment of the recent buildup. Siakki reported that the highest quantities of seaweed were observed on Friday.
However, he indicated that the natural action of the sea had largely facilitated the removal of much of the material by the beginning of the current week. The differing reports highlight the scale of the cleanup effort required for the coastal environment. While some residents have expressed surprise at the amount of debris, officials are managing expectations regarding the timeline for restoration.
The ongoing removal process aims to manage the impact of the seaweed accumulation on the resort’s appearance and recreational use for the local community.
