During the warmer months, bicycle traffic in Valakampiai presents a significant volume, leading to discussions regarding infrastructure improvements. However, according to Evaldas Morkūnas, head of the JUDU Traffic Management and Organization Department, the physical layout of the area—specifically the dense tree coverage along sidewalks and the limited available space—precludes the installation of entirely separate, dedicated infrastructure for bicycles. This operational assessment was conducted with the dual objectives of enhancing safety and improving the comfort level for cyclists, while simultaneously ensuring that vehicular traffic can maintain a consistent and smooth flow.
To manage the existing high volume of traffic, the department has planned for the implementation of new road markings. Under this revised traffic organization, dedicated lanes for both bicycles and pedestrians will be clearly delineated along the outer edges of the roadway. The central portion of the road will remain designated for vehicular movement.
Morkūnas explained that this design accommodates necessary flexibility for drivers. It allows vehicles to temporarily enter or exit these marked bicycle and pedestrian lanes when overtaking opposing traffic, thereby optimizing the flow of vehicles without compromising the defined pathways for non-motorized users. The markings aim to integrate safety measures into the existing urban structure, ensuring that while a separate physical barrier is not feasible, clear demarcation will govern the movement of all road users.
