Of the total cases, four individuals are reportedly recovering well following treatment. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) initially confirmed four instances of malaria among personnel working at the airport in mid-July.
According to the RKI, the illness affected individuals between July 4th and 6th, 2026. Authorities suspect the source of the outbreak was an infected Anopheles mosquito that arrived via air travel. The incident marks the first confirmation of local malaria cases in the United States in two decades, according to the airport operator, Fraport.
In response to the potential threat, mosquito traps have been deployed across the facility. A representative stated that the captured mosquitoes are currently undergoing laboratory examination. The head of the Frankfurt Health Service noted that it is possible the mosquito responsible for the transmission is already deceased.
