Amendments to the Electoral Code, which address content integrity in political campaigning, were approved by the Seimas on Tuesday. The legislation passed with 93 votes in favor, while 6 members voted against and 2 abstained. Once enacted, the Supreme Election Commission (VRK) will be granted the authority to assess candidate election programmes for the presence of disinformation, misleading, or false information.
According to the new provisions, an election programme must align with fundamental constitutional values, cannot contradict the national security interests of the Republic of Lithuania, and must not contain information that misleads the public or deviates from established facts.
