“The system is not working”: G. Nausėda has become concerned about Lithuania’s basketball affairs

The national basketball team, under the guidance of coach Raimondas Kuraitis, experienced a disappointing outcome during the qualifying round for the 2027 World Championship. In Italy, the team, which included support from three NBA players, ultimately fell short of a victory, losing with a score of 84:87. This result significantly diminished the team’s prospects of participating in the tournament scheduled for the following year.

Following the loss in Bologna, Lithuanian President G. Nausėda expressed his disappointment. A notable incident occurred when a billboard was observed featuring J.

Valančiūnas and M. Buzelis, bearing the message: “If we see what talents are gathered for our team this time, I will not hide anything, I was expecting much more, I was expecting victories, I was expecting a victory in Italy.”

Saulius Jakučionis, an editor at the national news agency BNS, commented on the president’s remarks. Following the setback in Italy, an internal review commenced, with the nation’s basketball team being led by the head of state.

The focus shifted to understanding the performance and the underlying system that contributed to the result. The immediate goal for the team was to regroup and address the shortcomings, as the current performance indicated that the team was not meeting expectations.
