The Ministry of the Environment stated that the Žiežulio lake is not included in the list of state environmental monitoring objects because it does not meet the established legal criteria. The ministry’s response to Eltai explained that, under current legislation, only lakes with a surface area of 50 hectares or greater, for which specific water quality objectives have been set, are incorporated into the joint European Union (EU) and Lithuanian water body monitoring network. Furthermore, the ministry indicated that the Varėna district administration holds responsibility for the maintenance of the Žiežulio lake.
This statement followed recent concerns raised by local residents regarding the perceived poor condition of the body of water. In response to these community complaints, the Varėna district administration contacted both the Ministry of the Environment and the Environmental Protection Service last week. The administration requested an investigation into the cause of the undesirable breeding observed in the lake.
The ministry’s clarification suggests that the current size and specific monitoring requirements mean the lake falls outside the scope of mandated state monitoring programs.
