According to S. Savickas, the General Director of Vilnius Water, an ongoing infrastructure renewal and development project is essential for effectively managing the growing volume of wastewater within the city and enhancing overall system resilience. Savickas stated that the initiative is designed to address two primary challenges: adapting the wastewater infrastructure to accommodate a continually expanding urban population and increasing its capacity to withstand the impacts of a changing climate.
The need for upgrades is highlighted by recent meteorological patterns, which have shown an increase in intense, short-duration rainfall events. To manage this, the system must ensure that stormwater collected in mixed wastewater networks can be rapidly conveyed to the main Vilnius wastewater treatment plant. A core component of this major project involves significantly increasing the capacity of the central city wastewater pump station, located at Baravyko g.
By bolstering the capabilities of this critical piece of infrastructure, the system will achieve reliable service coverage for the greater portion of the city. This targeted enhancement aims to maintain operational integrity even during periods of extreme weather, ensuring that the city’s vital sanitation services remain robust and dependable for the future.
