A recently presented report recommends that the Government and the Ministry of National Defence (MND) transition from procuring individual components to establishing an integrated air defense system. This proposed system is intended to provide comprehensive protection covering the entire national territory, critical infrastructure, and the general population. Presenting the concept, L.
Kasčiūnas and D. Kreivys highlighted that the current capabilities in air defense are considered a significant vulnerability, not only for Lithuania but also within the broader context of the NATO alliance. They argued that in light of evolving security threats and the experiences gained from the war in Ukraine, existing state efforts and investments are inadequate to meet modern requirements.
Consequently, the parliamentary chairman of the Seimas TSPLKD faction asserted that legislative action is necessary. He stated that Parliament must approve a comprehensive, multi-layered air defense concept. This approved concept would then serve to guide the Government and the MND in directing future weapons procurement strategies.
The core recommendation emphasizes the need for a unified, robust national defense posture capable of protecting the entire nation against complex aerial threats.
