U.S. and Iranian officials will hold indirect talks in Doha

Following developments at the Lake Lucerne summit, United States and Iranian officials are scheduled to hold indirect technical negotiations in Doha on Wednesday. These discussions concern a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and will be mediated by representatives from Qatar and Pakistan. According to the diplomat, the participation of US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will not be part of the technical negotiations taking place on Tuesday.

Despite this, the US and Iran had previously indicated their commitment to sending relevant officials to attend the discussions in Qatar. The negotiations aim to finalize the terms outlined in the proposed memorandum of understanding, a process that has been facilitated by Qatar. The scheduling of these talks follows recent diplomatic movements, including reports of discussions involving Lebanon, Israel, and the US, as well as prior requests for meetings in Doha.

The purpose of the technical sessions is to bridge the gap between the US and the Iranian delegation regarding the specifics of the agreement. The involvement of neutral mediators from Qatar and Pakistan suggests an effort to ensure a structured and impartial environment for the parties to negotiate the foundational elements of the proposed MOU. The focus remains on achieving a mutually acceptable framework through these direct, yet indirect, technical discussions.
