On Thursday evening, an operation involving the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard Detachment and the Criminal Intelligence Department of the Kaunas Police resulted in the detention of several individuals. The police conducted a stop on a Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicle near the Gariūnai village, located within the Kaunas district, along the route connecting Kėdainiai and Marijampolė. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a 66-year-old Estonian citizen, who possessed Estonian state registration plates.
Accompanying him was a 30-year-old compatriot. Inside the car, officials observed three young passengers seated in the rear compartment. During the initial investigation, the passengers presented themselves as Sudanese citizens; however, they were unable to produce any documentation to verify their claimed identity or citizenship status.
Following the stop, the two Estonian nationals—the driver and his companion—were detained and transported to the police station for formal questioning. The coordination between the border authorities and local law enforcement in the Kaunas area facilitated the interception. Authorities stated that following the completion of interrogations, a determination regarding any potential charges or penalties for the detained individuals would be made.
