During an operation initiated on Saturday night, officers from the Eastern Department of the Special Purpose Department of VSAT “Kovas” conducted a search following intelligence gathered by the VSAT Criminal Intelligence Department. The investigation focused on packages suspected to contain Belarusian cigarettes found in a forest area near the village of Žvyrių, located within the Švenčionių district and a short distance from the Belarusian border. After midnight, border guards observed a man operating a motorbike traveling from a neighboring settlement toward the site where the illicit packages were concealed.
Officers from the specialized unit immediately began surveying the surrounding area. Shortly thereafter, a white van bearing Lithuanian license plates was spotted on the same route. Surveillance confirmed that both individuals were actively loading the hidden packages into the van.
When officers from the VSAT unit positioned themselves covertly, they intercepted the activity. One officer successfully retrieved a package from the vehicle during the confrontation. The operation underscores the ongoing vigilance of the VSAT authorities, whose personnel from the Eastern District worked to secure the border region.
The involvement of multiple specialized departments allowed for the coordinated response, resulting in the seizure of contraband materials.
