Border control measures remain active across the Baltic states as officials report varying numbers of unauthorized entries. On one recent occasion, the Latvian border service reportedly prevented 51 foreigners from entering the country, while Polish authorities documented 8 such individuals. Looking at historical data for Lithuania, the flow of migrants from Belarus has seen fluctuations.
Last year, authorities recorded that no more than 1,600 people were admitted unlawfully from Belarus into Lithuania. This year, the number of unauthorized entries was reported at 1,268. Cumulatively, since the onset of the migration crisis linked to Belarus, an estimated 25,800 illegal migrants have been documented entering the country.
The influx of migrants into Eastern European nations first became prominent in 2021, an event which drew accusations from Western nations directed at the Minsk regime. In response to these border challenges, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) of the Republic of Lithuania has implemented controls specifically aimed at preventing migrants from Belarus from crossing the Belarusian-Lithuanian border illegally. These ongoing border operations reflect sustained efforts by regional security services to manage the movement of people into the region.
