The grain market is full of tension: experts identify the biggest risks

The general director of Agrorodeo presented an overview of global and Lithuanian grain market prospects at the LGPPA summer conference. The analysis is particularly relevant for stakeholders in grain cultivation, trading, and processing. According to R.

Lapinsko, long-term global data indicates a significant discrepancy between rising global population and the expansion of arable land dedicated to staple crops. Specifically concerning wheat, the data shows that the cultivated area has not increased commensurately over the past six decades. The acreage dedicated to wheat was approximately 202 million hectares in the 1960-1961 period, projected to reach about 216 million hectares by 2026-2027.

Concurrently, the world population has grown substantially, increasing from 3 billion to over 8.3 billion people. This demographic trend presents a significant challenge for food security. To meet escalating global food demand, the sector must rely on enhanced productivity and markedly more efficient utilization of existing land resources.

The presentation highlighted that the inability to increase production through these means could lead to substantial economic challenges within the agricultural sector. Therefore, navigating the current market requires strategic adaptation to maximize yield from limited grain supplies.
