Heat wave is a test for even a healthy heart: cardiologist warns not to overestimate one’s strength(1)

According to Prof. Dr. Vilma Dženkevičiūtė of the Cardiology Clinic of Vilnelė, high temperatures present health risks for all individuals, particularly when coupled with inadequate fluid intake, strenuous labor, or physical exercise.

The cardiologist warned that prolonged exposure to intense heat can affect people regardless of their prior health status. Symptoms of dehydration or heat-related distress can include generalized weakness, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and episodes of palpitations. Furthermore, there is an elevated risk of developing various heart rhythm disorders.

Dr. Dženkevičiūtė noted that a significant lack of bodily fluids can lead to fainting spells, advising that anyone experiencing unusual symptoms should seek immediate medical consultation. With weather forecasts predicting temperature rises up to 37 degrees Celsius, preventative measures are crucial.

When an individual feels unwell due to environmental stress, medical evaluation is necessary. A doctor’s assessment typically involves checking the patient’s general condition and measuring blood pressure. Depending on the findings, blood and electrolyte tests may be ordered to determine the appropriate level of care required.

The specialist stressed that cardiovascular systems are particularly vulnerable during heat waves. Monitoring the heart function is paramount. She cautioned that even seemingly healthy individuals can suffer adverse effects.

Prompt consultation with a healthcare professional is essential to manage dehydration and mitigate potential complications associated with extreme heat exposure.
