On Wednesday evening, officers from the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District conducted a routine inspection of a vehicle on the district road near Rakauskiai village in the Švenčionių district. The stopped car, a Skoda Superb, was being operated by a 45-year-old male resident of Vilnius. During the inspection, border guards discovered nine cardboard boxes concealed in the vehicle’s trunk.
These boxes were marked with the logo of the “Neman” tobacco factory, which is based in Grodno, Belarus. The contents revealed 4,500 packs of “NZ Gold” cigarettes, identified as having Belarusian banderoles. Authorities calculated the total value of the seized cigarettes, inclusive of all applicable taxes required for entry into Lithuania, to be 24,570 euros.
Following the discovery of the contraband, the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District immediately launched an official investigation into the matter. The seizure pertains to the alleged unlawful disposal of excise goods. Border guard officials noted that the law stipulates that such criminal activities are subject to penalties, which can include substantial fines or terms of imprisonment.
The operation underscores the border guard’s ongoing efforts to monitor and prevent the illegal cross-border movement of regulated commodities.
