It is proposed to change the procedure for the compensation of car expenses for persons with disabilities(1)

Lawmakers have put forward amendments to the Law on Targeted Compensation, suggesting a shift in the criteria for receiving financial support. The core of the proposal advocates that compensation should be linked not to formal, established metrics, but rather to the genuine necessity for an individual’s mobility. Should the Seimas approve these changes, the expanded proposed structure would make targeted compensation accessible to families whose children require a specially adapted car due to long-term mobility impairments.

This eligibility would extend to children with individual assistance needs categorized at levels three or four. Furthermore, the adoption of these amendments could broaden the scope of eligibility for adults with disabilities. Specifically, the financial support could be extended to individuals who are unable to drive themselves and do not possess a driver’s license, but for whom a specially adapted car is deemed medically necessary.

The proposed revisions aim to base the allocation of compensation on practical need rather than solely on standardized assessment criteria. By focusing on the functional requirement for mobility assistance, the legislation seeks to provide more comprehensive support through the provision of necessary specialized vehicles, thus improving the quality of life for eligible persons and families.
