The Ministry of Education and Culture reports that Lithuanian schools are increasingly identifying risk indicators among students, such as absenteeism, learning difficulties, or behavioral changes, enabling timely support for both pupils and their families. Regarding student retention, the Ministry provided data on withdrawals from compulsory education across recent academic years. In the 2023-2024 school year, 32 students under the age of 16 were recorded as having dropped out.
This figure rose to 41 during the 2024-2025 school year. However, the data suggests a decrease for the 2025-2026 school year, with the number of withdrawals projected to be 21. Ministry representatives clarified that the reasons for students being removed from official school records are varied.
These reasons include insufficient academic progress, issues with school attendance, some cases involving relocation abroad, and instances mandated by court decisions. The Ministry’s proactive approach aims to intervene early to support academic continuity. Separately, the Ministry has also highlighted concerns regarding future staffing levels, noting that without intervention, there could be a reduction of approximately 6,000 teachers by the year 2031.
