The Social Democrats have submitted a formal request to the Constitutional Court (KT) concerning the constitutionality of a decision adopted by the Seimas in mid-December 2020. This decision was responsible for approving the I. Šimonytė government program.
During a report, Orinta Leiputė, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas representing the LSDP faction, stated that the core concern is the need for consistent constitutional interpretation. The party argued that the Constitution should not be interpreted according to political convenience—that is, applying different standards depending on whether the ruling coalition is formed by conservatives or their political opponents. The Social Democrats emphasized that if the timing of the current government program raises constitutional doubts regarding the XXI Government, the KT must also evaluate the analogous situation that occurred in 2020.
They expressed the hope that both historical and current situations would be assessed using the same constitutional standard. The nature of this request centers on the procedural legality of the Seimas’s adoption of the specific government program. By bringing this matter before the Constitutional Court, the Social Democrats are seeking judicial clarity on whether the established legislative process meets constitutional requirements, irrespective of the political makeup of the governing body.
