Ten years in Palanga bake special meat sandwiches: nobody had thought of it in Lithuania(1)

For one individual, the memory of their mother’s kitchen remains deeply formative. Reflecting on their childhood, the author recalls spending time with their mommy, describing the atmosphere of cooking. “Mommy cooked a lot and delicious,” the author stated.

To this day, Lithuanian home-cooked meals hold significant cultural and emotional value. Specific dishes remembered include meatballs served with salads, “little caterpillar” recipes, and various soups, particularly those featuring beetroot, cucumber, and cabbage. The author noted that while the food was notably healthy, there was a persistent desire to explore and enhance culinary complexity.

Academically, the author earned a Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Technology from Kaunas Technological University, an institution also associated with the creation of a large-scale, 108-kilogram meatball in Palanga. However, a growing interest in food production guided the author’s focus toward Klaipėda, where they sought formal culinary training at the Tourism School. The period spent in Klaipėda proved intensely focused on gastronomy.

The author dedicated a month’s worth of living expenses solely to food-related experiences and learning opportunities in the city. This intensive immersion marked a significant pivot from multimedia technology toward the practical art of cooking. The journey illustrates a progression from nostalgic childhood memories to structured professional development, driven by a lifelong commitment to Lithuanian cuisine.
