The General Prosecutor’s Office appealed against the acquittal of P. Gražulis for the insulting of LGBTQ persons

The prosecutor’s office has initiated legal action seeking to uphold an earlier conviction against politician P. Gražulis, which included a fine of 10,000 euros, as originally imposed by the Vilnius District Court. The action stems from a cassation complaint, filed based on the prosecutor’s assessment that the criminal law was improperly applied during previous proceedings.

According to Tautvilė Merkevičiūtė, a representative from the Public Relations Department of the LAT, the general prosecutor’s cassation complaint has been submitted. The office is formally requesting that the appellate court’s acquittal be annulled, thereby maintaining the conviction of Petras Gražulis for the crime of incitement against any nation, race, ethnic, religious, or other group of people, pursuant to Article 170, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code. The filing indicates a disagreement regarding the proper legal interpretation of the charges.

While the prosecutor is pushing to reinstate the initial conviction, P. Gražulis’s legal counsel has stated that they dispute the contempt charge leveled against L. The proceedings highlight a significant legal dispute over the scope and application of incitement laws in Lithuania.

The focus remains on whether the appellate court erred in overturning the initial finding of guilt, leading to this appeal before the cassation court.
