They decided to eradicate illegal nursing homes: the fine will amount to up to 6 thousand euros

On Friday, the Health Committee of the Seimas endorsed an initiative proposed by Committee Chairwoman Lina Šukytė-Korsakė. The proposal aims to establish significant financial penalties, ranging from 640 to 6 thousand euros, applicable to both legal entities and private individuals providing unauthorized social care, care, and temporary respite services. Committee member Lina Šukytė-Korsakė stated that the draft amendments to the Act on Social Care were prompted by concerning reports from the Klaipėda district.

She highlighted the existence of numerous illegal homes for the elderly operating without proper registration or oversight. According to Šukytė-Korsakė, these facilities present severe safety and living condition risks. She detailed that in some of these unauthorized homes, residents of different genders are housed in single rooms, and fundamental standards of hygiene and food preparation are reportedly not being met.

The current regulatory framework reportedly struggles to monitor these unregistered operations, as the facilities are functioning without necessary permits. The legislative push seeks to strengthen oversight and deter the provision of substandard care. The proposed fines aim to create a substantial deterrent against individuals or organizations that operate outside established legal parameters.

The committee’s support signals a legislative move to formalize and enforce stricter compliance measures across the sector, addressing the immediate threat posed by these unregistered and substandard care facilities.
