Encephalitis: doctors warn that you can get infected until late autumn

Ticks pose a health risk that extends beyond deep woodland areas; they are frequently encountered in urban green spaces, including city parks, private gardens, country estates, and open meadows. Given the prevalence of these vectors, public health advisories emphasize preventative measures against associated diseases. In the European Union, Lithuania reports some of the highest recorded cases of tick-borne encephalitis.

Due to this risk, health experts confirm that vaccination represents the only effective preventative measure against this condition. Dr. Evelina Puknytė, an infectious disease physician at the Health Decision Center “Antėja,” strongly advises prompt vaccination for individuals who have not previously received the immunization.

She notes that immunity develops over time, suggesting that early protection is crucial. Delaying vaccination means delaying the establishment of a robust defense, leaving individuals vulnerable as the season progresses. The recommendation is particularly urgent for residents and travelers who plan to spend significant time outdoors, whether in natural reserves, local parks, or while traveling throughout Lithuania.

To ensure optimal protection levels, it is advised that vaccination schedules are not postponed, even as the autumn season begins, thereby ensuring preparedness for continued tick activity.
