The preparation for a new toll road system, named “Via Toll,” is underway in Lithuania. This new infrastructure mechanism is scheduled to become operational on January 1, 2027. The system is designed to calculate user fees based on the precise distance traveled, marking a significant departure from the existing vignette model, which currently charges fees for a predetermined period of road use.
According to Deputy Minister of Transport Dovilė Sujetaitė, the introduction of this system reflects a transition toward a fairer toll structure, consistent with practices in other European countries. This new toll will be paid based on actual mileage, incorporating considerations for the transport’s impact on both the environment and the infrastructure itself. Sujetaitė emphasized that the primary objective of the collection is to ensure that the generated funds are reinvested directly into the maintenance and development of Lithuanian roads.
She advised vehicle operators and drivers to approach the implementation responsibly, considering the implications of their vehicle purchases and usage patterns. The core principle of the Via Toll system is transparency in payment; users will be charged only for the specific road distance covered. This mechanism aims to create a self-sustaining funding source, ensuring that the costs associated with using the road network are directly covered by the users.
This shift is intended to modernize the national road funding structure while maintaining the quality of the country’s road infrastructure.
