In the Seimas – discussion about nuclear weapons deployment: considering changing the Constitution

The leader of the Conservative party stated on Friday during an interview with LRT radio regarding the principles of deterrence. The leader described nuclear deterrence as the fundamental basis of all deterrence strategies. The discussion focused specifically on the concept of demonstrating capability, such as a nuclear-armed carrier flying over the nation’s territory for deterrence purposes, rather than actual deployment.

According to the leader, the current Constitution prohibits such actions. Shifting focus to the legislative process, the leader noted that discussions concerning amendments to the Constitution are underway in the Seimas, which he characterized as a vote-counting stage. To proceed with an amendment to the Constitution (ELTA), a requirement of 94 votes must be met.

While the leader expressed confidence that the necessary groundwork could be laid to initiate the process, he emphasized that the feasibility of moving forward is contingent upon the ruling majority possessing sufficient political power. If the ruling majority holds genuine authority, the leader indicated an intention to advance the process.
