Turkey seized more than a ton of drugs at the border with Greece

The Turkish Ministry of Trade announced the interception of a significant shipment of illicit drugs at the Ipsala border post, located in northwestern Turkey. The confiscated materials reportedly included methamphetamine, heroin, and opium, with an estimated market value exceeding 55 million euros (or 64 million US dollars). While Turkish customs officials did not provide a comment to the news agency AFP regarding the drugs’ point of origin, other news outlets, including DHA and IHA, reported that the lorry carrying the consignment arrived from Iran.

This recent seizure contributes to a larger reported effort by Turkish authorities to combat drug trafficking. According to official figures, Turkish authorities stated that a total of 33.6 tons of drugs were confiscated in 2025, representing a cumulative market value of nearly 840 million euros. The interception highlights ongoing efforts within Turkey to secure its borders against the trafficking of various narcotics.

The seizure underscores the continuing focus of Turkish law enforcement agencies on monitoring and interdicting large shipments of illegal drugs attempting to enter or pass through the region.
