According to Dalia Gedgaudienė, a representative from the association “Future of Nature,” the usage of disposable packaging and plastic containers experiences a substantial increase during the summer months. This trend is particularly pronounced in high-volume areas such as resorts, beaches, festivals, and outdoor dining establishments. Gedgaudienė emphasized that the focus for environmental efforts must be directed toward locations generating the greatest amount of waste, as these areas bear the most significant environmental impact.
She noted that the summer season is crucial not only for economic activity but also for influencing public consumption habits. In response to this seasonal surge in waste, regulations are already in place. Gedgaudienė pointed out that current Lithuanian law prohibits the free distribution of disposable plastic products to consumers within public catering facilities.
The expert further addressed the regulatory framework surrounding such waste. While acknowledging the economic aspects of the industry, she stated that existing requirements are not excessive. The focus remains on managing the waste stream generated during peak times.
The combination of increased tourism and outdoor dining during the summer places considerable strain on waste management infrastructure, making the control and reduction of disposable items a paramount concern for environmental sustainability efforts across Lithuania.
